When I was a kid, my paternal grandmother had a flat in our house. When she went into hospital (permanently) we took over looking after her cat, The cat still lived in my Grandmother's flat, and had it to herself for the rest of her life. We went in to feed her, and she had to walk through the house to get to the cat flap to go outside, but that was all the interaction she had with us. Apart from that the cat had her own apartment that she lived in, separate from the family.
When we went away on holiday our neighbour came in to feed the cat. But despite the fact that we never really interacted when home, the cat sulked when we were away. And when we came back the cat would go out, sit at the end of the garden, carefully picking the furthest spot that could be seen from the house, and sat bolt upright with her back to the house for an entire day, just to show us what she thought about us for leaving her temporarily!
