Rephrasing, why are coastal states democrats?

Coastal states in the west and the northeast attract artists and intellectuals. Boston/Cambridge could be considered America's brain trust. To a similar extent the Bay area, with Berkeley, Stanford and other top schools. There are pockets, even in Texas, like Austin, often called a blue town in a red state. My hero of modern history and politics was a linguistics prof at MIT. I presume he still lives in the area.

An old partner of mine, non adult, once said, Boston is the brains, New York is the money and D.C. makes things change.

I'm aware of this, I visited St. Louis 2+ years ago and learned that it's a somewhat blue town in a red state.
Thanks for clarifying!
