Camcorder Question

I am going to buy a new camcorder, so I can get better quality mpegs, However I am a little lost...
I went a few places today, and was told 2 different things...
1.) A firewire has better quality for mpegs
2.) The new digital cams have both, but the usb 2.0 is supposed to be better than firewire??????

Can anyone help me with this? and suggest software to use to create my mpegs? Thank you!

In my experience FireWire is much faster then USB 2 even if the specs say that USB 2 is faster.

Also FireWire 800 has been out for about a year now and is twice as fast as the original Firewire so I would expect to start seeing that on camcorders soon.

As far as camcorders go only the 3 CCD ones are going to give you pro results, but they start at about 2k.

Heather, I would for sure get a mini DV over the hi8 or vhsc.

Fire wire is supposed to be the best way to down load video, but I do not know anything on USB 2.

I also suggest pinnacle 9 for editing and whatever for videos. You have a wide range of formats to choose from mpg, wmv, real and so on.

Heather - going along with Cleo on this one - I noticed a delay using the USB thats almost unnoticeble - but I think it has something to do with the USB bus in the host computer but I was using a pretty damn fast processor and loads of power. Never saw the same thing with firewire - and definitely the Pinnacle software is nice - it was easy to teach someone else which goes a long way for me

Another nice things about FireWire is that you can daisy chain it so no hubs are needed.

Basically you can plug a FireWire drive into a computer and then plug the camera into that or just keep on adding devices. I often have 3 or 4 drives all plugged in like that. Most FireWire drives have two ports but things like cameras only have one so they need to be the last device on the chain. You can also use hubs if you want but they are not needed.

I would not worry so much about how it connects as to how many sensors the camera has. I've been shooting video for Angel and the difference between the single sensor cams and the 3 CCD video is dramatic.

To break down the video a bit more for you here we go:

We own 3 different 3ccd cameras - each researched well but I would only recommend two.

Sony VX2100 - $2349.95 USD @ B&H

Tried true camera that has a decent price and shoots top notch digital. We have 2 of these and at the time could not have been happier.

Next is our latest buy:

Panasonic DVX 100a - $3449.95 @ B&H

Now yes this camera is a grand more but I assure you it is worth every bit of it. However if you are just going to be doing amateur shoots than the VX2100 will be fine for you. The DVX 100a brings in a ton of new features.

A lot of people will preach the Canon XL-1s or the GL2 - but the Panasonic will hands down deliver way more for the money.

I'm actually watching this thread myself very closely.

For the tranny paysite that I'm involved in we need to get both a decent still camera and a decent video camera. Angel and I have made a deal. If I buy a new digital camera she will buy a new video camera.

After doing lots of research it looks like I'm going to get the Nikon D70. It's about $1300 with lens.

I really like the fact that I can shoot up to 144 pics before waiting for the camera to write to the card. Great for shooting sex scenes. I'm using a Nikon 990 right now and it actually isn't bad but having to wait 10 seconds between each shot just kills the moment. LOL

Back in the seventies I was a professional photographer who did mostly 4x5 studio work. I still have a love of photography and have been wanting a better camera so this is a good excuse for me to by a decent SLR digital camera.

The Sony VX2100 looks to be about what we are looking for in a video camera.

For stills, I am using a Canon Digital Rebel, 6 megapixel, nice and fast, works like a real camera, no delay between the click of the shutter and the actual picture getting taken.

For video, I use a Canon XL-1, but you might find that overkill. A canon GL-2 isn't a bad choice, the sony is nice... if you want real nice, check out the panasonic AGdvx100:

This runs in 24 frame per second mode, which is really good for getting a look very close to film, if you are interested in going down that route.

Don't forget to allow for software and hardware to edit and create those lovely end files.

Cleo - You definately cannot go wrong with the D70 - one of the best cameras on the market right now.

RawAlex pointed out the strongest feature on the DVX 100a - the fact that it shoots at recording modes which makes everything come together much better in the end. For you audio junkies it also has balanced XLR inputs - which make a world of difference.

However - the DVX 100a is $1000 or so more than the Sony VX2100 - so if you do not require the extra bells and whistles I would suggest the Sony.

As stated in my earlier post - the VX2100 is definately holding its weight as far as price to performance ratio goes. You cannot go wrong.
