Backups?

Hello everyone, recently my computer was the victim of lightening and I lost all of my files on the home pc. Can anyone here recommend backup software?

Thanks.

The hardrive was toast, nothing could be recovered. I am looking for something to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Not software even though software comes with it.Get a maxtor extrenal drive .I like the 120 gig .its basically one touch and it'll back up or just copy files unplug it til you need to back up again. If you fry a drive you can always install the software to a new puter

From a surge protection standpoint, most common surge protectors won't stand against lightning. It has enough voltage to 'jump' connections. Plus you need a system which protects from surges through your Cable/DSL modem as well. Years ago, I used to install DirecTV and PrimeStar. After any big storm we would have to replace lots of receivers. Almost all surges that killed the boxes were via the phone line.

As tiny mentions, Maxtor external drives are nice and I have 3 of them. The USB 2.0 and FireWire options are nice and a great speed for backup devices.

The recommendation is a good one.

Thanks everyone, I am looking at getting an external drive now. It only takes one time for me to learn.

I keep two FireWire drives of backups. One of them is stored off premise just in case.

I have my whole hard drive mirrored to them so that I can boot from them, not sure if you can do that with a PC.

Once a month I telnet in to my servers and gzip my home folder that I then download to my local machine. This is a problem with FoxyAngel's site as it is over 10 gigs and growing.

M3server does back her up but what if a meteorite hits them and vaporizes them along with the backups?

I backup to a harddrive I have in my network file server for my pc.

For my server I have Cyberwurx back it up daily for like $25 a month or something like that, (depends on how many gigs are being backed up etc). And I also rsync it down to my local server at my house once a week.

Thanks, it was just the home pc. I didn't really loose any work stuff mostly personal stuff. Techie Media backs me up on my server once a month so I am not too worried about that. I also have all my updates on a disk file, so now I am just waiting for the external drive to get here and I will be happy happy happy. And of course it will never happen again because I am prepared.
