Leonard Nimoy 1931-2015

Before I discovered Dr Who I was a Star Trek Fan. I was started off on it my my mother who was a big fan of the show (or more likely because she was a big fan of William Shatner). I still like the show. My main link with the show is that I used to watch it with my mother (who is no longer alive), and hearing the first few bars of the original theme and the "Space the final frontier...." speech always makes me nostalgic, and a little sad.

Today I woke to the news that Leonard Nimoy had died. It hit me hard. One of the last links from my childhood, both from Star Trek and Mission Impossible. Plus, of course, the link with my mother.

Also because he was a great actor.

There is a two hour news and current affairs program on the radio first thing Saturday morning in Britain, and as I was doing the housework I listened while I worked. They kept broadcasting tributes to him. Then they closed the show by playing the ending to the J. J. Abrams Star Trek Film. This was the original theme with Nimoy reading the "Space, the final frontier..." speech. I lost it. I just sat down and cried.

Good luck, and best wishes to Leonard Nimoy as he crosses the real Final Frontier.

I have never been a fan of science fiction, but as a kid I did enjoy Star Trek. As an adult I have enjoyed William Shatners wildlife documentaries. Dr Spock was also the title of a book on babies and child rearing that was commonly given to new mothers in the 1960's. I have never been stupid enough to breed, give me a puppy any day!

Yeah but the guy in Star trek was Mr Spock, not "doctor". Make that mistake at a Star Trek convention and they will nail you to the wall and eviscerate you!

Spock was the only science fiction character I ever cared for. RIP.
