do not try to run a porn site from your broadband connection!!! first off, it probably violates your ISPs t&c. Secondly, you are prolly hooked up with a limited connection (upload speeds are typically a lot slower than download speeds, this is because the average surfer wants fast downloads when they surf) which would make your server very very slow and not able to handle the traffic. Finally you would be introducing a HUGE security risk to your own server unless you know how to manage things properly. Its just not worth it and it just won't work that well! Oh, and dont even get me started on using a win server on the internet, unless you know what you are doing win servers are extremely easy to hack and bring down.

Go get a cheap hosting plan, lots of places will give you starter hosting packages for $25 a month or less and that will give you WAY more bandwidth, security and server responsiveness. Plus you won't have to stress about being shut off by your ISP.

cheers,
Luke

Thanks luke for your reply apreciate it.

I understand the security stuff about protecting a members area. Im not doing that i jsut using it for a tgp posting and mpg posting. IF i went with a dsl plan where they offer the static ip address how much upload would i need to suport a gallerys on the major tgps each day?

or am i still thinking fucked up?

I think what he was saying, which is usually the case is that your DSL or cable connection will normally have something like 256kb upstream, 1500kb/sec-4096kb/sec downstream.

This means that no matter what, one person downloading from your connection will easily max your upload capacity. They will only be able to download from your site as quickly as you can upload to a webserver.

Second, the security issues with running a windows based webserver are more than just protecting members areas. While you could run Apache and php & mysql, unless you know how to lock things down completely, you can run into problems. Even some of the larger IIS hosting companies have problems securing windows servers from time to time.

Besides the fact that one day, your DSL provider could just snip your line for violating the Terms of Service, I believe in 99% of the T&C for broadband providers is a provision for not running servers. I don't think they care about the guy running a few pageviews/day -- but, hosting galleries will easily get caught and probably clipped quite quickly.

With server/bandwidth prices where they are, buy yourself a cheap box somewhere.

More importantly, if you are doing that sort of thing and get your line cut off, it is much harder to every get service back. You could end up very quickly doomed to dialup only for the rest of your days at that address.

Servers are NOT expensive, bandwidth isn't a major deal anymore either. Either get serious and make it a business or give it up. Playing around like you are doing will just get you burned.

Yes, like cd34 explained, I was talking about security in the sense of hardening your server to hackers and evil do'ers, without losing functionality or speed. If you do not know about how to run a server, I would highly suggest you signup for a managed plan, this will save you a lot of headaches and prolly a lot of downtime too. For starting a TGP you would not need a dedicated server unless you were also planning on submitting galleries off that server as well...or unless you can get yourself to the 50-100K visitors daily point rather quickly!

I don't feel like turning this into a sales pitch, so if you want to discuss your specific needs please hit me up on icq 118860760 or email sales@chilihost.com.

cheers,
Luke

Yeah you don't run porn sites on DSL
or on Winblows. That'd be like running a
taxi service with a skateboard.
Luke at chilihost posted,
he'll set up right.
If you really needed full control over your own
server you could get a server at EV1 with
1,000 times the bandwidth you'd get from DSL
for close to $100 / month.
However, if your plan was to use Windows and
DSL than that pretty well proves that you
absolutely positively have no business running
your own server and should get someone like
Luke to take care of that for you.
