Trackbacking
Blind wanted me to write up a little bit about trackbacking so I'm glad to take the time to do that here.
Some blogs have 'trackbacking' turned on. Many do not. Mine does, so lets take a look at a recent entry of mine: Take a look at this entry and you'll see a small 'meta data' box that includes a lot of information, including the trackback url, in this case its: http://www.boogie-blog.com/cant-get-...htm/trackback/ So, lets imagine that you like my entry on ashley-brookes and want to mention it in your blog. In exchange for you supplying a link to my entry about her, you can also 'trackback' my site and have your link appear naturally as part of my comments section. In your blogging script there should be a small part of your 'post' form that includes a "Send trackbacks to this url". you should simply plug in the url into that form and it should take care of everything else for you. you'll get a free link in my comments section, I'll gain relevenance for linking to another blog of the same topic and genre, and all is right with the world. Any questions? |

When life hands you lemons, squirt the juice in your enemy's eyes

So in addition to putting a link back to your blog on my April 1st post I could have added your trackback link when writing it up and it would have automatically noted in your comments that I had done so... is that the proper way to use it?
I can see why alot of people turn off the trackback feature as there's potential for abuse. Any trackback etiquette tips?

Blind,
taken care of. Tart, That is the proper way to use it. with modern scripts like wordpress and typepad its pretty simple to moderate trackbacking and with the right wordpress plugins trackback spam isnt a concern. Its unfortunate that most webmasters dont allow trackbacking out of fear of trackback spam. Also wordpress 1.5 applies the "NOFOLLOW" tag to all trackbacks and comments unless you use the plugin "DOFOLLOW". So trackback spamming a 1.5 wordpress blog is pointless, you'll gain no linkworth. so turning on trackbacking is safer than ever really |

Oh as for trackback ettiqute.
1) not too often 2) dont go spamming a guy and linking to everything he posts. (see number 1) 3) dont steal content link to it instead 4) establish communication with that blogger to make sure he knows you're not a spammer. all can be useful guidelines |

Kids are great, Appu. You can teach them to hate the things you hate and they practically raise themselves now-a-days, you know, with the internet and all
|
It should be pointed out that trackbacks are the ultimate recip link in the world of blogging. However, if you allow trackbacks, but have the nofollow tag implememted there is not much chance of me giving you a trackback. I suggest getting the plugin for dofollow, but set up your anti-spamming features as well

lol blind, stupid me. fixed now.
http://www.boogie-blog.com/virtual-bartender-2.htm Here are a few good wordpress plugin anti spam tools. Got them from the wordpress codex If you've submitted to a link list lately you may have seen the grahpical confirmation codes. This one is for comment spam: http://wordpress.org/support/topic.php?id=27328 Of course word press 1.5 includes the 'bad world' filter list. This is under options. Grab their suggested list and plug it in. I moderate all links and comments, especially those who trigger the 'bad word' list. And for trackback spam take a look here at the wordpress forum as new tools are being developed quickly for 1.5. if ya find one that installs fast let me know! http://wordpress.org/support/search....trackback+spam |

No offence Apu, but when they were handing out religions you must have been out taking a whizz

It's been very frustrating for me lately as I am trying to get into the trackbacking "groove" with my blogs... most people have the NO FOLLOW or don't have them turned on or are using programs that don't allow trackbacks in the first place. VERY frustrating.
We have had some captcha issues with our comments/trackbacks in the past but have found other ways to combat frequent spammers. It seems like it's always the penis pill and casino guys that have so much free spamming time on their hands. lol Good tips here, nice write-up Boogie. Will refer our bloggers here for some tips. Thanks! |
