What would cause a massive spike in traffic?

Ok this is not the normal request that you might think the subject contains. Heres the issue. When I role over to the new day my script is set to run and rescan all the logs for that day. It runs at 1am. Well for yesterday 07/05/05 traffic is up 300%. I dont get a ton of traffic. It has been on the steady increase. But nothing that crazy or fast. We have been doing an ad campain but nothing along those lines has been commming from the place. We did have an issue where one of the banners was not placed on a site for a few days and that issue got fixed durring the afternoon. But I personnaly dont think that could be the source. anyway what should i be looking for to debug this? Thanks Jugg

The only big spikes in traffic I ever had was when some doofus like fusker hotlinked my pics.
Let's hope your site just got really popular

Thanks Fonz. I'm looking over ways of preventing this in MS iis6. Found some good software (hopefully) to combat this issue. If that is in fact the issue. I too hope that my site go popular but with no sales from all that traffic increase I doubt it. lol. Im also hopeing it might be be a log file issue and the software farted when reading it. As things seemed to have returned to normal. I would think if someone was hotlinking this would be an on going problem. Unless they took the page down they were linking to. But thank you for your info it did help me start to look in a direction of something I need to do anyway. Thanks Jugg..

Start with your webserver's logs. A quick visual scan might reveal the source of this extra traffic. If not, you'll have to dig a little bit deeper and sort/count hits by client IP, by referrer domain, and by requested URI.

Aw, Dad, you've done a lot of great things, but you're a very old man, and old people are useless

The most likely culprit (if your site has a substantial number of pages) is that it has been getting indexed by a Search Engine 'bot. Some stats packages help you identify these, otherwise you might look for something that tells you about the "User Agent" or similar - that should list a lot of IE, some Mozilla, and name the 'bots.

Kids are great, Appu. You can teach them to hate the things you hate and they practically raise themselves now-a-days, you know, with the internet and all
