Beginner question about hosting in the U.S.
Looking to put up my first TGP and was having a little trouble finding info on the legality of using a hosting company located in Texas.
Any info is greatly appreciated. |

I was told by somebody in Hostgator that traffic trading is not allowed. Is it true?? I am interested in using their service as well but I need traffic trading, so I am reconsidering...
Please advice, I wish the info I received is wrong..... |

I did hostgator for a while...excellent customer service...I switched to hostnine for even better customer services and more for less. I have a reseller account which gives me unlimited sites for $20/month and 10,000 megs hostgator.com was 10,000 megs for $25 a month...I just looked and now they're at 12,000 megs for $25. That's not bad...both are good, both offer cpanel...bottom line though, if you have ANY questions about what's legal and what you can or can't do, hit the pre-sales chat link and ask them. They'll tell you. Don't trip on thinking they're going to think you're a perve when they ask you what your domain name is and you say bigdaddylovesanalingus.com or Ilovefatbitches.com because they've heard worse and they're still going to help you. They'll answer your question without a doubt. Typically it's not incest, bestiality, child porn, or hate speech...

also you better make sure your site is small to medium, cuz if God forbid you grow too big and get too many concurrent connections, you get suspended and asked to either move to semi-dedicated plan or to another company - ofc, if you're lucky they'll give you week to do it ![]() seems like too many connections spoil it for the other kids on the box. to me, sounds like overselling does too. I say steer clear of host gator's virtual plans. I understand their reseller packages are pretty good, and dedicated servers are supposed to be great also, but in what virtual is concerned they're pretty quick to freeze accounts as soon as they don't like something.

That's funny you bring that up Johnny, I forgot about that, one time I installed an amateur script that had an endless loop and I couldn't get it to shut down. My cell phone rang 3 minutes later and some guy was talking about purging my accounts...that's aggressive!!!

Well first of all welcome to the boards and secondly I quoted your question since no one has bothered to answer your question. 1. Seek legal advice from a lawyer, do the wrong thing and the wrong Uncle could be knocking at your door. 2. Make sure that you are familiar with 2257 and how it affects you. 3. Now think about hosting. I would certainly like the opportunity to earn your business and of course I think that http://www.caro.net offer some of the best hosting around but if you take a look around here on the boards you will find other good alternatives as well. Once you know what you need and you hav all of the legal stuff locked down, Caro.Net can support your requirements from Shared to Virtual to Dedicated hosting, with seamless migrations as your grow, great technical support and an awesome network. Good luck with your business just take the time to set it up right, believe me it is easier to do that now than later. Oh, and by the way wether you choos us or someone else for your hosting I will always be happy to help with any questions that you have. ![]() |

Hey that's pretty MMemmer, You throw out all kinds of shameless plugs..I did a forum search for the phrase "earn your business" and that phrase came up 5 out of the top six results from you. I'm not hatin'...that's awesome that you can drum up some business on the forum...If customer service is even half as effective, then it should be an effective organization and the fact that webmasters haven't posted negatively about your service it a testament also...good for you...

As for the phrase, well isn't that what we all do? There are always alternatives, we don't have a corner on the market and I prefer to have a friendly competition so that I can show my face at industry events and enjoy a drink with competitors and customers alike. ![]() |

Well the more I think about it, if you're hustling customers on the board and no one is complaining, that says a lot, at least to me...says something's working out...I can only realize that because I've gone through my ups and downs with hosting and now I'm happy for the time being so I'm not in the market. New guys don't realize that when they're new because they haven't had the ups and downs yet...hopefully they're read this link, catch my drift and you'll get some additional business...good marketing man...

While I need to have a reputable product my words and reputation are what I bring to the equation and while I may not have near the technical education of many that read the words here at the boards it is important for me to try and ensure that my customers are satisfied. Sadly unless I hit the lotto or get near as lucky in Vegas as Juicy I will be around the industry for quite awhile (which really is a good thing as I was away for a year and missed it) so my reputation is important to me. LOL besides that I am old school, hell my wife just says that I am old, and believe that words have meaning and that it is important to be responsible for what you say and do. Thanks again for the kind words and it is good to hear that you are happy with your hosting, now lets both go make some money. |

Back to the question at hand... HostGator is a reseller for The Planet (formerly EV1) so you are not only subject to their rules, but also the rules that the Planet has. Remember, these guys do not specialize in adult hosting and there are so many quality adult oriented web hosting companies out there, that you should look at those first. Next, let me comment on the resource allocation discussed above, read paragraph 7 a of the Terms and you'll see what the resource limitations are. Resource limits are something you should be aware of with any shared hosting solution. The bottom line is do your homework and pick the best host for you, the niches you are going to promote and what kind of sites you are building. Good luck! Matt |
