Lack of communication?

Hi guys,
Big time noob here, but nevertheless, I have a concern.
I know a lot of people do the adult webmaster thing as a hobby, or as a part time gig for extra cash, and I understand many do not spend 24/7 monitoring their sites.

My concern is, the apparent lack of communication from some people that I have tried to contact.
As far as the message boards and such, all have been great. And generally all correspondence has been really good. I'm just bringing up a couple situations that have occurred in the past couple weeks with blog directories, social sites and this type of thing (and I am not bashing here).

Example: I submit to a social site regularly with no problem. I go to submit a link one day and my login is invalid. Type my info again, hmmm still invalid. Have I been banned? I don't know. I try the password retrieval option and no email ever shows with a new password. Now I'm thinking my account has been hacked. There is a 'contact us form', so I hit it and explain what happened when I tried to login. Seven days later, no response...There is also a direct 'contact us' email addy, so I send a message. Still nada. BTW, my blog is pretty much 'mainstream', with nothing in it that would provoke being banned. If I was banned for something, I was never told what for, and I made an alternative login that worked fine, so the login page was not down.

Another example: I submit on a form that will list my blog at numerous blog directories at one time. All recips are in place, and I fire away. A week later, still not listed, no approval email, no denial email. I received the automated email saying 'thanks for your submission', so my entered email addy is correct. Just nothing afterwards. Attempt contact, nada.

I don't expect a response within a day or two. But after a week or so, you would think a desicion would be made, or an explanation email would be sent, whatever the case may be.

Being a noob, I have submitted to sites that weeks later show up as 'attack sites' and are blocked from Firefox, so obviously I'm skeptical.

I would just like to know from you guys and gals that run these sites, what to expect. Is this lack (or delay) in communication, in some cases, normal as far as social sites, directories and link lists go. Or have I just hit on a few bad apples? Like I said, I know some people do this as a hobby (or for malicious intent?) and may not really care when or even if they check their emails and such, but you would think if you put yourself out there you would maintain at least a little professional courtesy.

I am by no means a professional at this, but in my day to day line of work, this kind of shit would not fly, no matter who the customer was.

Just curious and somewhat concerned.

On an older, well established site, a long delay would be unusual. On younger sites, long delays and a lack of communication are not that rare. If a link list, for example, is powerful enough for the owner to produce a living from it, then it will most likely be updated within a couple of days and those owners, though busier than most, are pretty good about replying to messages from submitters.

Newer lists tend not to be updated as often for multiple reasons. When you have a lot of pokers in the fire, it's very difficult to justify spending too much time on a site that's not earning enough to pay for your time. That doesn't mean that you abandon it completely - but it does tend to fall lower and lower on your list of priorities.

Keep in mind, a lot of us work from home because were semi-antisocial. That tends to affect the way in which we communicate a wee bit.

I wouldn't necessarily say there are some bad apples, just some people who for whatever reason don't reply to emails as quickly as some.

I would say in general porn people respond far slower than most, no idea why.

from my limited experience I was actually surprised by how helpful and quick to respond site owners are, but that is just based on sites that actually review their submissions. I have never tried to contact a social bookmarking site owner yet.
