Thumbs up Exit Links On Free Sites

A Free Site (in the Link List world) has a warning page. This is still considered a "Good Faith Effort" and is listed in the Industry Best Practices over at ASACP.org. Now, I'm not going to get into the content that we all - myself included - put on these warning pages, but two of the many things that they should all include are an "enter" link and an "exit" link.

I have noticed that some Free Site builders don't use an "exit" link Please STOP not doing that

I have also noticed that some Free Site builders just link to Google or Bing or some other safe site/page that they do not own. If you're not going to link to a site/page that benefits yourself, maybe you'd consider linking to a site/page that benefits a board member?

That's where the idea of this thread came from.

I think that it'd be a cool idea that, if you have a site/page that you link your "exit" link to, you post it here. This way, those that do not have their own site/page to link to may consider linking to it

Mine is:
Click Here To Exit - http://www.clickheretoexit.com/

Feel free to post yours & let's help each other out

No way. Exit links are meaningless. They have no real function, are not legally pertinent, and I dont want to put them on freesites.

Every page has an inherent exit link, it's called a back button.

This is a "Microsoft Help Centre" type argument. I.E.: While it is factually correct, it has no real bearing on the question. I could use a similar argument for never giving up my seat on the train for an elderly person/disabled person/pregnant woman. I could also use a similar argument to never post help or advice to people who ask for it on this board.

I could also use this argument as an excuse to never do even the smallest thing to help stop young children from viewing my porn sites. Hang on, wait - you have already done that.

Although to be fair, I did just try G's click to exit link, and got a link to a page advertising a sex contacts site and a joke about Clinton's penis. That is NOT an appropriate exit link, and if you are using that, then Jeremy's humorous comment becomes a valid suggestion too!

I've been using the exit link http://cleogoodstuff.com/ for years.

I've changed what is there over the years many times but it has always had non adult stuff. The best thing I ever had there was an ad for Blu Cigarettes as I actually got sales from that. Right now it just redirects to my outdoor blog but that will probably change at some point.

Really? Seems like they are good for a few hits. Of course if you send them to Google or some such, you're just pissing away traffic, but it seems they have a small, but real value.

There used to be a site specifically for exit traffic. Seems like it shut down. I guess no one ever got rich on exit traffic...

I started using an exit link on my new freesite project. I'm linking to one of my mainstream blogs. http://www.mylanguagecourse.info/

I was speaking legally.

But, value wise, if I want to send traffic to a nonadult revenue producer, there are a lot more effective ways to do it than thru exit links.

If greeny wants me to give him a support link for something, I have close to zero issues with doing that. His traffic is good, hes a good guy, I got no prob supporting his projects, tho, frankly, I'd be happiest with something that shared revenue.

But I looked at the legal theory on exit links long long ago, decided that the premise, that you have to give an unqualified surfer a way off the page as a legal protection to the page owner, was baseless. You dont see anything like it anywhere else - why? - because it's baseless.

Adult content warnings in general may be baseless, but, I like them.

say what?

sounds like you are being dismissive here, but I can't quite make out your proposition.

I kind of thought everyone would know what I was talking about, but for your benefit (and I cannot believe I am having to explain this on a board aimed at professional webmasters):

Google, and other search engines, are not perfect. Some of the traffic sent to your site by them will be people looking for things that have no connection to what you are offering. Some of those "miss hits" will be from people not looking for porn. Some of those people will think "Oooh great, free porn" and continue into your site. In those cases, congratulations, you have a "porn virgin", the best (and rarest) kind of surfer there is. However most will think "I don't want this shit" and decide to leave.

As Toby said, there is a back button, and some will use it. However human nature dictates that most won't. Those people will look for a suitable link to leave by. If you have an exit link, they will use it. If not they will use one of your sponsors or recips. Again, in most cases this is fine, it is their choice.

However some of the accidental surfers will be kids. And there knowledge of this business will be low. Not all recips look like porn to someone with little or no experience. For example I just opened a site on LOR at random and considered what the links would look like if I did not know what "porn" meant (i.e. I looked at it as though I was a seven year old kid) I got the following recips:

Richard's Realm - Lord Of The Rings type site.
Pervespace - Sci Fi.
WetPlace Free Porn - Something to do with swimming or boating or water sport.
Greenguy's Porn Links - Greenguy, sounds like a superhero.
The Red Cherry - Title of a "learn to read" book.

If you don't have an exit link, this will be the playground you are offering to kids. Congratulations, you are successfully corrupting minors.

I don't know if I'd agree with that, if anything they're an easy way to build link popularity to another site you run.

True, there is always a back button, but why not give the visitor an option--- and a laugh? I used to use Greenie's link, but then started my own joke site a number of years ago. I now use that for all of my exit traffic.
