In the business without knowing HTML

....or even how to build sites.

Are there any people here that have free a/o paysites that are making money that do not know HTML or how to build sites?

Yes, that was kind of confusing.

Basically are there any people here that are webmasters that do not know how to use HTML?

Do you mean people using some kind of WYSIWYG html editor or do you mean people who buy ready made turnkey sites?

Yes, there are webmasters here trying to learn html, and site building.

I'm one of them trying to refine my site building.

I used Netscape Composer for a long time but over time you will learn html. Just don't quit your day job until you do but it can be done.

Plus there are people who might buy a program or paysite and start there hiring a webmaster to operate it for them.

I guess I don't feel so bad them. But then again I do not seem myself learning HTML anytime soon, heh.

I am really trying to see if people here are doing OK by using a backend system.

When I made my first site in 2000, I went out and bought Front Page, and learnt it from scratch.

My first sites were pretty ugly too LOL But Uncle Bill builds software for clueless people like me, so I was able to breeze through and make money well enough.

I've really only begun to learn HTML and use Dreamweaver in the last year or so, which much help from DD and DD I'm still a code nancy.

Of course, in 2000 there was room to move and learn slowly. In 2004 things are much harder for newbies I think.

About a year in I made this site:
Absolute Beginners Guide to Making Adult Websites I just wrote out what I had learned and thought others might want to know.
Quite a few bits of it need updating, but it documents how I originally made my sites.

You'll pick it up quick enough, especially if you use it each day. Don't let it put you off getting involved in the biz. Many of the most successful sites are very simple, and some of the most successful webmasters too

I couldn't imagine being in this business and not knowing the basics of html and how to make a site, seems like a prereq to me

WYSIWYG editors are good to get you started, but after a while you should consider learning html.

Get hold of a free copy of Textpad and examine a simple web page's source code with it. You could also use notepad, but notepad has limitations and is harder to read.

A-*&^%^$#$-MEN!
Personally I feel as that is the absolute minimum in order to call yourself a 'webmaster'. No problem with people who don't know, none of us were born with that knowledge, its the ones with no desire to know their craft at all that bugs me. How hard is it to learn the basics of HTML?
not difficult at all, I learned it in 2 days (the basics now where I wrote my first website in notepad) from a tutorial website that is still up after all this time. (this was 1995 when i used it). a WYSIWYG editor is fine, I use dreamweaver, BUT, sometimes something unpredictable will occur and you just HAVE TO know how to debug your code by hand.
Just a spaz's 2¢

spaz

for anyone interested, here is the link to Dave's Site, an interactive HTML tutorial. yes there are a couple of pop ups and yes, I used this site to learn HTML in 2 days. Printed the whole thing out, put it in a binder and studied it between repairs on a factory floor.

I know a guy that doesn't know how to upload or download. He only buys photo sets that are already thumbed and the vendor has to upload them to his server. He purcashed a few gallery templates and had them loaded on his server as well. Then he uses one of those auto create and submit programs that his host installed and configured for him.

I'm not really sure if he's making any money or not but he doesn't seem to do much else and isn't broke at age 40+.

I never imagined someone could know so little about the technology involved and even get a gallery created. Talking to him and listening to his questions was totally amazing.

I don't think I could survive in this business without knowing at least the basic html stuff - I now use a WYSIWYG editor (Namo) but I'm viewing & editing the source at least 4 or 5 times for each page on the sites I build.

I think you will be surprise at how fast you start picking up a little bit here and a little bit there. Especially if you use front page since it seems to have a lot of glitches and things it just can't seem to do welll.....

It was already said but many of us started like that, that's why you either learn or hire someone who knows how to build a site:-)

i never used a wysiwyg editor in my life, i always sticked to the source (call me oldschool, hehe) and edited with arachnophilia or weaverslave.
i know i may be dumb for not using the wysiwyg editor at least for laying out the site, but i don't like them too much personally. Although dreamwaever seems pretty nice
