Search Engine Tricking and Traffic Stealing
How do you all feel about all the search engine tricking and traffic stealing there is going on?
This might just be me, but as a user (customer) of search engines, not just a webmaster (provider), I am getting increasingly more frustrated on all the false results, and there have been times where I have simply given up. Let me give you two examples, the first one being about search engines tricking, actually an entry page that provides no real information, and that only is a mouse trap. I came upon this page while doing some research on a Czech model. Search term in Google: Lucie Haluzikova This entry is on the first page. Mac And Bumble Lucie_Haluzikova.html - Nude centerfold gallery ... ... Portella Lucie_Haluzikova.html Lucie Chytilova Lucie_Haluzikova.html Lucie Frisova Lucie_Haluzikova.html Lucie Haluzikova Lucie_Haluzikova.html Lucie Horinkova ... http://www.macandbumble.com/catalog/...aluzikova.html - 45k - Cached - Similar pages Except for the top menu, this page http://www.macandbumble.com/catalog...Haluzikova.html only contains links to other similar page that also only contains links. No real information, only model names repeated endlessly and combined with other model names. MacAndBumble has similar blind pages for ALL the other models combined with Lucie_Haluzikova.html on that page, and they have been allowed to do this for at least 6 months. Now on to search engine traffic stealing, again I was doing a search as a user to find some sexy lesbian jokes. Search term in Google: "Sexy Lesbian Jokes" Note that the term is in quotes. The very first, or second, depending on when you search is this entry: ------------------------------------------------------ Only here lesbian jokes lesbian jokes. Enter to lesbian jokes now. Very hot ! lesbian jokes. free mother daughter lesbian pictures interacial lesbian sex asian ... lesbian-jokes.les-x.biz/ - Similar pages ------------------------------------------------------ However the link http://lesbian-jokes.les-x.biz/, is a redirect to another page that has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with sexy lesbian jokes http://www.allsitesaccess.com/main....43&p=cleanp Hell, I dare you to try and do the same search but without the quotes, Sexy Lesbian Jokes, and I bet you can't find a single sexy lesbian joke, going to any of the links on the many first pages. This traffic tricking and directly stealing traffic from other sites, which actually has the search term(s), is especially a problem when searching for adult related content. I know that even though the adult website industry contains perhaps the largest number of dishonest people that any other industry, there is many honest and hard working webmasters, including many people on this board. So let me repeat my question to all my fellow honest colleagues. How do you all feel about all the search engine tricking and traffic stealing there is going on? Please post a comment, and take my little poll. Thanks |

I agree, it is a serious problem that has gotten out of control.
![]() Fortunately it seems google is now looking at these by hand. ![]() |

We know all about it.
We know it sucks. The scripter boys are crying crocodile tears all the way to the bank. If google was on top of it a few hundred more domains would have been zeroed out - but google has a long unspoken policy of ignoring adult, and has only acted on the most outrageous cases. I have some hopes that the new 3-way competition between goog, yahoo, and msn will encourage some more severe action against the scripter boys. small hopes, but hopes nonetheless. enjoy your gfy conversation with the kiddies. |

Bill - gotta say I agree that nothing will happen - especially since Yahoo is even easier to game - and they are doing nothing about it

One thing is for sure, if nobody complains to the search engines, or discusses the problem in boards like this, NOTHING is going to happen!
I actually got a reply from Google on one of my complaints, and EVERY time I do a search and the entry turns out to be a redirect or otherwise totally misleading, I take 1 minute to fill out a complaint form. You can all sit back and does nothing, letting it go on, or join me and other frustrated honest webmaster, and file a complaint on those who steal traffic you might have rightfully gotten. Or even complaint as a regular user, and not as a webmaster for your own site, if the search result turns out to be false. Sure it might seems like a needle in a hay stack, but enough users and webmasters complaint, maybe they will do something about it. One way could be to make a site check robot, that actually picks not necessarily all entries, but at least random entries, and checks more thoroughly for things such as redirects. Please keep up your valuable comments! |

Secondly, there are many of us that do report bad pages all of the time - and things do get done about it - the part that we cant control is that as fast as they are removed, the same group of WMs can replace those pages with the touch of a key - its not rocket science. Welcome to the game and understand if we sound cynical its only because in the past some here have reported sites only to have their own sites get reported or caught up in an algorithm "improvement" that was triggered by complaints. |

This is one of the main reasons why we don't use keywords from spidered sites in our directory. The entries are created by human edited by hand and that is the only sure way to do it.
Unless, of course, somebody can invent a useful articificial intelligence system that can accurately distinguish between "spam" and relevance. It's hard work but it's the only way to give relevant search results - at present.

Rock stars ... is there anything they don't know?

Even though it's simplistic, i'd say that all of google's problems arise out of the fact that they don't charge for listing your site.
Right now they are totally dependant on advertisers for revenue, and it's beginning to hurt them. Yahoo and MSN already have a system in place, and when( not if) google starts charging, google will be playing catch up. Which is why I'm placing my bets on Yahoo. Just my 2 cents. BTW, I'm new here and it's nice to have a meaningful conversation with professionals. Last edited by freeadultzone; 2004-08-22 at 01:54 AM.. |
