That should work although I use Askimet (which comes with WP) and just have it set so that I have to approve a first time comment. Askimet catches about 95% of the spam which means I only have a few...

and a valid one....but now the question becomes have you checked and or submitted your site to them. Some do require you submit your blog, much like technorati and I'd bet most of them really don't...
