Since I do TGPs too my pics are always over 40K to keep within the listing rules of some of the TGPs. Hopefully I keep them under 50K but at times they hit 60K but I'm on dedicated hosting, not virtual so that helps a bit. And I make the sizes between 640-800 on the long side.
Anything bigger than 800 is too big. If I get a free site submitted with pics 900, maybe ok. If the pics are over 1000 then I decline it. The pics do not load in the screen. And anything near 100K is automatically deleted.
