I have lost when buying spots but only when I bought a single listing that was $100 or more. Whenever I have bought a "block of spots" like 7 galleries or a month's worth I have not lost.
For galleries I suggest the following:
WorldSex for $90
DrBizzaro & GorrillaLinks are $30 for a month
BangThumbs account is very good ($40 I think)
