I've wondered if it's truly worth it, from a sales standpoint, but the people who admit to submitting to all 7,000 link lists tend not to post too much and never really state its value. They must be too busy submitting.

I agree, I love building but I hate submitting and mirroring
I try to time my submitting so it only takes up the first period of a hockey game. I'll only mirror a site that I feel really kicks ass and since I'm my own harshest critic not many pass that test
Also, I rarely spend much time worrying about SE's unless I'm working a small niche where the competition's not too tough.
