It
was a Mormon thing, mostly out of necessity, during the early years of the church. Before they settled in Utah women members far outnumbered men. When it was no longer necessary, and they were getting some grief about it from the gov't, they changed policy and told members to obey the law of the land.
There is an offshoot group however that continued the practice.
