Watched the movie Recount last night with Kevin Spacey. It's based on the 2000 election and Florida recount fiasco. I say fiasco because as a Canadian I really didn't know that there wasn't actually a recount, that the Florida people in charge (Republicans under Bush) did everything they could to stop and delay the recount. In the end there wasn't a total recount (which is completely stupid, it's an election so shouldn't the people's votes be counted to be sure who won?) and Bush became President with 537 votes more than Gore out of almost 6,000,000 votes. Before the recount Bush was up about 2000 votes but as counties in Florida were being recounted the lead dropped to 500 which is why Bush's lawyers fought to stop it and they won that fight, hence winning the State and the election.
Thankfully Bush's time is done but what a mess he's made of the country.
