Turned out to have nothing to do with the update.
A few days ago I used a
TechTool CD in my machine to fix another Mac that was in firewire target mode connected to my laptop and it seems that the TechTool CD installed a protection startup item that wasn't compatible with 10.5. This was the first time that I had rebooted my laptop since then so it wasn't until now that this issue showed up.
It wasn't until I had cloned over just about every piece of the OS from another laptop one at a time to see if it would boot each time that I finally started looking in the root library for what was causing the issue and noticed the new startup item in there.
I'm now posting from my main laptop again and all is well.
