It's Friday ... (2014-01-10)
Good morning.
Strike the chorus, it's suppose to be above freezing for an extended period of time! Of course, that means possible flooding! Just working on my link list which is taking me much longer to configure than I had ever imagined. That's about all on the agenda for today. I think I might make Jamie Oliver's Sweet Pea Fish Pie for dinner tonight. I saw him make it on TV and it looked good. Later a hot tub, beer and a game of cards with friends. Have a good one! |

It's warm and wet here today without any dead fish in a pie.
News says we had a mild earthquake yesterday. Didn't feel a thing but it seems to have somehow brought drama to my boring life. One of the models that I maintain her website for had a boy toy steal but her iPhones and a bunch of other stuff from her yesterday while she was sleeping. Another model that I maintain her site for doesn't seem to know what day of the week it is since I don't see any updates on the server from her. Then there is that wacky folks from the restaurant and spa all in a big power struggle over what Valentine's ads should look like with me the designing caught in the middle. And it's raining... |

Good morning world
Not a good start on the year so far. The few days of flu-like sickness was made worse yesterday when my other (newer) MacBook showed me a kernel panic warning saying I needed to restart. But on restart the process keeps hanging right before the sign in screen is shown. Tried all the usual first step things. Started up in single-user mode and ran the disk check routines. No problems. Started from CD drive and ran Hardware Test. No problems. Reset SMC and zapped PRAM. Still can't get the sign in screen to show itself. Little feedback wheel spins and screen changes like it's going to show the login box, but then the little wheel comes back and spins for awhile, then back to almost loading the login screen, then back to the little spinning wheel. We don't have an Apple store down here (nearest one is about 100 miles), so I need to decide whether this is a "have to send it in to be fixed" problem, or whether it's something I can fix myself without needing to send it away. So working on this problem is my plan for today. Wishing everyone a better day than I'll be enjoying. |

Hold down Command V on reboot to see what is actually going on when booting. Also try holding down the Shift Key when booting to boot into safe mode. |

Always a good idea to have a second admin account on the computer. Personally I always enable a root account. Then if I'm having issues I can boot into root and do things like delete all my caches or just about anything since a root account has compete access to do anything to any account. Also show all hidden files is sometimes helpful. 10.9 Code:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE Code:
defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE |

Good Day
We are suppose to get back up into the 80's today or tomorrow which I guess will be nice but I will surely miss it with all the work that needs to be done. Found it interesting that trash build up on a mac can stop it from booting. Guess Simon will need to punish someone for not cleaning that up |

Morning. Just a day that I thought would be much calmer is going nuts. Bah. The morning was good at least. Now I'm just excited for this afternoon when I can be done with the week.
Have people in town and had a blast last night going out. Hadn't gone that hard on a Thursday in a long time. Have a good one everyone. |

I found that kind of strange myself. Was the Mac out of drive space or something?

Actually, while doing a safe boot disables some things, it also moves other things to the trash, including all font caches and the dynamic loader cache. Emptying the trash to make sure the dynamic cache is really deleted is the thing that helps you get past a screen hang during startup. The creation of an empty folder (or file) and then putting that in the trash and emptying the trash a second time is the superstitious part, which is a learned behavior that comes from restarting but still not being able to login after emptying the trash only once in Safe Mode. So now I make sure to empty the trash a second time before restarting since that always works. I've picked up a lot of aboriginal behaviors in nearly 30 years of owning Macs.
