So I can't find "The Official "Why I Didn't Get Listed At Link O Rama" thread... I'm looking and looking and looking and my dog is sitting here with his legs and eyes crossed telling me I have one more minute to get the leash or he's quitting. So I'm doing it here real quick so the dog doesn't do it over there...

Been submitting for awhile, decent acceptance rate at the various lists but now I'm trying to move up the rookie ladder and tighten up things. I am wondering if the below examples would be accepted at Link-O-Rama? Whadda ya think?

DJilla, Hi Binxgook here. A couple things I noticed are

1. None of those sites fit 8x6. That will get you rejected immediately.

2. You have some banners that arent showing. That may get you rejected.

3. You are using some REALLY OLD sponsor content on atleast one of those sites and that will surely get you rejected alot.

4. They all seem to be the same design, which is not good. I have been blacklisted because of templates so be careful of that.

Why push the surfer to get off with your free stuff?? Why should they go to your sponsor then?? I even stopped using the word "FREE" for the most part in my sites. The more FREE thier is, the less of a need to buy anything.

Thats kinda a strange set up you have for your recip tables. Makes the page really long and some of the recips are grossly to large.

Thats some of the things I see right off the top. Hope that helps alittle.

Pages are a mess in Safari and aren't too great in Firefox either.

if you can see the site in IE i think that should be enough

I dont know about safari but I see alot of FF comming from overseas. I would not go so far as placing them as a WM only browser. FF made a very strong play when it came out. IE was having a shit load of problems at the time and that also made for a strong campain for people to get DL it.

Just at first glance they scroll at 800 wide and you are using video caps both are not allowed I think you should take a peek at the rules and see if your work fits http://www.link-o-rama.com/greenguy/therules.htm

Ya, no doubt about that. I use css but I'm just adding the the browser detect script to my main site pages now and just haven't got around to doing it on the free sites yet. But, without question the whole FF and Netscape user base has grown, is growing, too much not to have one. Safari, ehh I don't know of any scripts. If I'm adjusting for FF should be ok for Safari too right? I've never checked. Thanks.

It looks to me perfect at 800 but I use a tabbed browser overlay to IE, so maybe its diferent at 800 in IE too. I'll take a look at it in IE... oh yeah look at that a little scroll, what ya know.

Silly rabbit of course read the rules! Its just that a lot of times I've encountered the vid cap thing to be kind of flexible. Admittedly I've run into this before. In good conscience I cannot show surfers purchased content as a way to sell them on a site for a girl they'll never find. I know I would be furious and I'll just never do it. Unfortunately, the sponsors are not as forthcoming with pic content as maybe they should be. So I guess I won't be able to get many listings with you which is really sad. This is probably why I didn't get listed a long time ago.

BUT, you've got a great LL and a great board here that I'll visit often and thanks a lot for the heads up and 411.

Safari is an apple browser, not a 'webmaster' browser. I review in Firefox and decline sites that look that sloppy. Your sites look ok in IE because IE is a piece of shit that doesn't care about many errors. Build for Firefox and you're almost guaranteed to look good in IE.

If you can't judge what your sites will look like in 800x600 resolution, then test them in that resolution before submitting them. I get sites from experienced builder/submitters who still have the occasional horizontal scroll and it never ceases to amaze me. Test for size and click every single thumb before submitting.

You can't have Java or JavaScript on free sites. So, no browser detection scripts and no auto-date scripts (which is currently on those galleries). I'm seeing some odd full size pic dimensions. I hope you aren't cropping out sponsor watermarks.

I see alot of spot on advice posted here. Here's what I noticed, btw I'm on Netscape browser..

One of your gallery pages have 5 links (one to a links page, 4 sponsor links). That's 2 too many for alot of LLs.

Also, I see pages where the source is one line long, so I'm guessing it's script generated. If I was a reviewer, I'd like to be able to read the source code.

Are you using scripts to generate as many free sites as possible using a template, rotating colors and other variables?

Your banner on sexdugs/blow/ gallery is blind. It needs to say more than sample1 $4.87 three days.

You still have javascript on some pages. No one will accept your site until you get rid of it.

If you want to insert dates into your pages, use PHP.

<? echo date("Y-m-d-"); ?> or whatever will get the job done...although I don't really see the point of dating your free sites.

The Asian site looks the best overall, but as MML said those are vid caps. If that's all you find in a sponsor's free content area, shoot an email to your sponsor and ask for a few pics, promote someone else, or just buy your own content.

You know, we use CSS like everywhere we can ( think accessability ) and are constantly trying to improve on it. Actually, unfortunatey, there are often BIG differences btw FF and IE under CSS in some areas like fonts and placement, etc. making browser detect needed.

We date the pages merely for copyright notice reasons. Perhaps we could loose it but its a good habit to get into with all pages now a days. Particularly with companies like google moving in test waters ( see: http://www.itworld.com/Tech/2987/nls...egoogle050301/ )

Well, yes and no. We're going to make the three quoted sites razor sharp and then yes follwing that, basic duplication and rearrangment. Not by a script though through the use of CSS and by hand. CSS makes it fairly easy once its all right.

Listen, free sites are very simple things. You are complicating the process. Listen to us! You don't need a bunch of extra shit. You don't need to make altered copies for three different browsers. You don't need the date. All you need is 4 SIMPLE HTML pages. Index, main, gallery one, gallery two. Most of use CSS without a problem. Sure, there is an occasional element that IE fucks up, but that's Micro$oft for ya. Surf a few link lists and take a look at a bunch of listed free sites. You'll see what we're talking about. Don't reinvent the wheel. A new wheel always gets blacklisted.

And don't go thinking that we haven't heard all of this same shit before. We're still here and the people who have fought the system aren't.
