Why the index.html???
Why the index.html???
Why do some linklistowners demand that you make an entrancepage with an url ending in index.html? I really dont know... |

Its because these ll's owners dont like to be on the mirrored index/warning pages.... When you built a site you'd probably want to add it to more than 6-9 LL's and to prevent your LL table have like 30 recips you build couple of your warning pages and add diffrent recips....

Some just like the index.html the biggest reason because some get so sick of index1234.html stuff and thats sort saying you dont rate the first page

I just hate warning pages with numbers in them. Makes me always want to see who got a lower number then me, it's an ego thing.

MrMaryLou and Cleo I dont use numbers in the url. I choose words instead.
Like this one: http://www.gloryhole.nl/herfirst.htm It just got declined by a linklist saying that they dont want doorways...(Its the one you approves in a flash,Cleo) hmmmm now I read the url...her first comes from Her first lesbian experience....maybe the linklistowner think I am talking about her first freesite here? Grezpa I do like 10 recips on a warning page... |

Here is a simple soulution
site/01/ site/02/ site/03/ all indexes all leading to site/main.html and every one gets an index.html ![]()

But why would a linklist prefer site/02/index.html above site/herfirst.htm?
Their ego's would be hurt and they would want to be nr1 then right??? Hmmm I bet you Cleo is going all over the site right now clicking all the thumbs... ![]() |

You could always do this. Let's say it's a Jenna Jameson site. You do it like this:
/jennajameson/blond/ /jennajameson/blonde/ /jennajameson/babe/ /jennajameson/babes/ That's one way of doing it. |

Pornopat, There are a couple of reasons why the index page is better than others:
1 - the SEs tend to list the index page more than other pages. If you submit to DMOZ or others, you are going to submit one site, not all your doorways. Better to be on the doorway that is going to get submitted, no? 2 - Link lists are traffic trades, not just listings. You put me on index98984.htm with two other link sites I have never heard of, and I know exactly how much traffic and how much SE exposure I am going to get (IE: NONE!). Where is the "trade" in that? ...and so on. As for the site/01 site/02 thing, just remember to put all the HTML into each directory... having the site step down directories (down to site/main.html ) won't get you listed in some places (like with me) and also isn't very good SE design (doorways are not very welcome things!). If you are going to create folder level entrances, make sure the site stays all in that folder for the entire surfing experience. Alex |

Ramster, Alex, Sy, I still dont fully get it...
Now I understand how you could work around the wish of the webmaster creating subfolder but I do not understand why the webmaster would have this wish. For example I use and warningpage called site/herfirst.htm then a main page called site/main.htm followed by two galleries called site/les1.htm and site/les2.htm Nomatter what I call my warningpage may it be site/herfirst.htm or site/les/index.html or even site/les/index69.htm the recipes are the same. For this freesite I put up recipes for like 8 of the biggest linklists. So I dont think this can be the problem. Is what you are saying that searchengines have a preference for certain structures then? Do they prefer subdomain +subsubsubdomain+ subsubsubdomain(2) over subdomain+subdomain+subdomain(2) ??? |

I think Alex and me have had this discussion before. LOL
![]() Different places have different rules. It is their list, their rules, their traffic. If you want to get listed you need to follow their rules. Doesn't matter if it makes sense or not, people have the right to run their list anyway they want. Read their rules and if they are acceptable then submit to them. If you don't like their rules then don't submit to them, but don't ask them to change their rules to suit your site building ways. As for this thread… I don't give a shit what you name your warning page. Numbers irk me, but as long as there are other lists also sending traffic to the page then it really doesn't matter to me. Seeing my recip on the same page as the largest of the large link lists gets me wet every time. |

What didn't you understand? Alex said it, INDEX pages get better listings with SE than something named main or warning or enter more often than not. There has been several other reasons stated as well. If you can make it the way it's been asked than why beat a dead horse on the way you want it? Just make them the way it's been asked. Simple. |

Ramster, Cleo you make it sound like I am whining about a rule I dont agree on.
I was merely asking for information on why that rule is there. You see if I notice a rule that I dont see a reason for I ask what the reason might be. I start with the intention that I might be unaware of some important knowledge. Knowledge is a good thing I think... Sure I can follow subjectivity like numbers and go along with that but I never mentioned any numbers in my url. I did not hear any convincing logic until the possibility of searchengine optimasation was mentioned by Alex. To me that sounds strange but having it confirmed by Ramster now I can do some investigation into it and see if it is to my advantage to structure all my sites this way. And if I find that its all bullshit...I will make my freesites the way they want it and my own sites in the way I want it. ![]() |

Pornopat,
As the others have said... different people have different reasons for requesting the"index.html" page. "Some" linkslists demand this thinking it gives them better return traffic/seach engine link popularity/a general ego boost.. ![]() It is based on the assumtion that the default file in a dir/subdir is "index.html eg: http://www.myfukindomain.com/dir/ will actually display http://www.myfukindomain.com/dir/index.html by default. This is of course a crock! and can be changed by server setup and/or htaccess http://www.myfukindomain.com/dir/ may display any number of files as default http://www.myfukindomain.com/dir/index.html http://www.myfukindomain.com/dir/index.htm http://www.myfukindomain.com/dir/index.php http://www.myfukindomain.com/dir/index.cgi http://www.myfukindomain.com/dir/blowitoutyourass.html If these people knew what they were actually talking about they would ask for a recip on the "default index page" not on "index.html" specifically. Many people class the default index page of a site as your prime "real estate" I would not be giving a link to any link lists that demanded it unless they could show you a benefit for "you" to gain.. not just them HTH DD

Thank you for the extensive answer Dave.
I have been searching the web on it and asking a lot of people and all say similar things like you. Funny thing is that they listed me before not demanding this index thing. But hey Its their rule...So they can get it the way they want next time. I will just not put them on the same list with the big people like you and Cleo anymore but put them on the one with the smaller caps.... ![]() |
