NY Times article about women's porn

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/02/20/na...c79ce0&ei=5062

An excerpt:
"While women have long been involved in the sex industry as providers and consumers, their participation now has become more of an economic phenomenon, largely because of the Internet. In fact, experts say, the Internet has been a major factor in unleashing women's interest in all things sexual. Surveys by Nielsen/NetRatings, which measures Internet audiences, have found that women account for more than a quarter of all visitors to sites with adult content, with more than 10 million women logging on to such sites in December alone.

"ComScore Media Metrix, an Internet research firm, has found even higher female demand for adult sites — 42 percent of all visitors in January — with the highest rates among women ages 18 to 34."

OK, OK, I know what you're all going to say But come on... 42% is a wonderful, wonderful figure!!

The only thing wrong with this article is it didn't include our URL LOL

I always figured it was a bit high, we allow our members to write in, and you cant even imagine how many Female members we have in Anal Destruction, or how many Female surfers either buy memberships to sites of ours like Facial humiliation or Facial whore, either for their boyfriends & themselves (couple buy), or entirely for themselves.

It's great, just think of how many years it took the majority of woman to feel comfortable about expressing their true sexual feelings. We always have this conversation. Woman are finally REALLY coming to a time where they feel free enough to do whatever they choose. It's good stuff.

I think they're probably all webmasters looking at their own sites or their competitors sites .. the numbers of women webmasters is the shocker.. there's a lot of them

I think women like making money from porn a lot better than paying for it

What I found odd about that statistic is that it has remained pretty static over the past two years. I read an article performing the same basic metric back in late 2001 (I think it was) and they showed the same 42% figure. That study also showed statistics stating that women are 60% more likely to purchase online than men.

LOL

We women webmasters are a completely separate species of course, who in no way resemble other "proper" women. Good, normal women go to church and don't want to look at porn, let alone pay for it, right guys?

That 42% are just a bunch of deviates...

IMHO the Internet has opened up MANY doors for women to explore their sexual fantasies & interests that otherwise might have been supressed. Think about it - most men have no qualms with walking into an adult bookstore in their local town, buying the stuff they want and going home to enjoy it. Heck - most get Playboy subscriptions in the mailbox or puchase magazines @ local convenience stores. It is seen as "OK" by most and is acceptable behavior.

Most women will be wary of shopping @ such a local store for fear of who will "see them" parked outside the store or inside - especially in small, gossipy towns. "So-and-so might see my car and tell everyone @ church or the PTA!" Many women also struggle to discover and identify their sexual identities/roles in a society that expects them to be good wives, daughters, sisters and mothers. The double-standard of "it's OK for boys but not for girls" is still alive and well in many parts of the world.

Mail order programs for adult oriented novelties - especially those that promised discreet packages, order forms & billing on credit cards - have done well for years. It only makes sense that the world of the Internet and its promise of anonymity and safety of use in the comfort of one's home would boost sales even more.

I think that as time goes by, women will become even more and more comfortable with sexual media and adult purchasing. I think 42% could be accurate - I don't see why not.

I've read somewhere that women are fully aroused within 2 minutes of watching porn. And it has to be Hardcore porn.

Women might be surfing "adult" but they certainly aren't surfing thehun everyday looking at galleries. The porn we are accustomed to selling is surfed by men at a much higher percentage than 58%. I'm talking about free sites, avs sites, galleries and everyday paysites that we as a collective make money on daily.

Just wanted to make this clear...

I was disagreeing with the statistic.. not with the fact that the "for women" market exists, is strong, and is viable.

I dearly wish it was 42% , but I simply dont believe the number.

I too have a hard time believing that the 42% figure is correct.. and if it is.. does this include unwanted popups and other means of getting people to a site they don't choose to visit? It must if this figure is even close to right.

I hear from webmasters that the female porn market is a viable one.. but have never seen any first hand proof of that myself. That's not to say it's not true, I just haven't persued it myself, only because in my mind, it just doesn't seem worth persuing.

I do know one area of porn that females are definitely into from firsthand experience, and that is in having their own sites. I would say that a good 35% of my clients are female and that includes couples.

What I see most is wishing.. I see men wishing that women were more interested in porn.. it's been that way since I first got into this market. Believe me, if I thought there was a market there, I'd be the first one to promote it and make money from it, but as a female, I just don't see it happening in the way of porn site membership sales. I do however appreciate and profit from the fact that women like to make money in the business, so that's what I go for
