![]() Work, gym, work, errands and more work is what my day is looking like so far.
Learned something new last night. One of the Firewire drives that that I use to back up my servers to my local copy started throwing up errors last night. It would sometimes spin up but then under heavy load it would become unresponsive forcing me to restart the Mac it's connected to. After messing with it for a bit it got worse and would show up but wouldn't allow me to actually access anything on the drive. I could hear the drive trying to spin up but would never spin all the way up and sounded like it had gone bad. Thinking that the drive had gone bad I removed the drive from its enclosure and connected it via USB adapter in order to try to recover its data but it spun right up and worked perfectly. Turned out that the power supply in the enclosure had gone bad. It was putting out voltage but not enough to properly power the drive. Not wanting to spend money I took the IDE interface from an old Firewire enclosure and used a SATA to PATA/IDE Hard Drive Interface Adapter that I had laying around to connect it to the SATA drive. It wouldn't fit back in the enclosure with the adapter so I just wrapped it with clear packing tape to the other Firewire drive. Looks really ugly but works great and it's not like anyone can see it stashed behind all the other hardware. |
