My son found out yesterday that he got a job at a local Federal Lab. It was on the list for base closings until 5 mins ago so I kept quiet. But, it is not closing and he has a Federal Job

WoooooHooooo
Now, maybe he will move out

That is great Jim! Congrats to you and your son! I thought I was almost done also but didn't work that way. My oldest son is doing well and out on his own. My daughter moved back in with us a couple of years ago, is still here as is her 2 year old son. My youngest son will be 18 in six months and says he's moving out but hubby and I aren't holding our breath. Will we ever be alone?? Not looking like it here at my home......

Later while chatting with his new boss the subject comes up, "So what does your father do?" After a moment of pause the son says, "Just check your files under the name Jim. That'll pretty much cover it."

Congrats! You can't go wrong with a federal job, no really, you can do no wrong, seriously they can't fire you no matter what shit you do...Bush as an example.

I think Mr Blue spelled out most of it. But, there are a lot of free things that go along with it. Free Health Insurance being the best part

And, my son is 24 right now. School has been a long journey. But, he will graduate next month with a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science.

Jim tell him to RUN and RUN fast. Take it from me 6 years from now you will wonder where your wonderful sons heart went. But anyway after a few months I think soon. this june or july tell him to look into the TSP program. Its like the Fed 401k. Mine was loaded with 30k in just 4 years. It will be good for him to see the wonderful workings of a mindless place. Best advice I can give him, I got from a lady who worked for the feds for 40 years. Was "DO not try to figure out what is going on, you will get a heart attack or just end up in a mental hospital" If I only knew back then how right she was cause i have had trips to the shrink over my last job.. good luck to him and i really mean that...

OH one more thing if he is on the GS pay series tell him to try and get listed under a 2210 status. His boss will now what it means. It's an extra 10k a year just for being in that feild. IT. Also for the next 1 1/2 he will receive step increases in pay which will amount to about 2500 every 6 months plus the congress mandated 4% every jan. It really is a good job but as a dad listen to him when he tells you its stressful. No one in my family thought my job was stressful at all. They just saw a 20 year retirement. Im serious now. For your sons best interest listen to him when he says he needs a break.

Good advice Juggernaut! There is nothing like working for the gov't to really make you see the gross inefficiency of it all, not to mention the stupid people that have to be dealt with every day.

Luckily, I only spent four years "vacationing" in the Navy.

What I found to be the sadest thing about the whole process is everyone there is very much wanting to do the best thing they can for the country. But the rule and politics makes it so hard. I worked in IT the whole time. An Jims son will see how crazy it is. I mean the secuity flaws I found were just nuts. When I reported them, along with my fix. We had so many regulations we had to follow that we could never keep up. Worste time we had was about 3 years ago. BCERT/RCERT (The usa's computer response team) they are the only ones allow to pen test a node. They comprimised over 900 of our boxes in 2 nights and we were powerless to stop them. I got to the point were I took an old LTC's advice. Don't ask to fix it, just fix it an deal with the aftermath with "Im sorry" Jims correct near impossible to be fired. I fixed so many things behind my bosses back, he never knew and if he did nothing he could have done about it. It's just a crazy work place. Lots of people drink cause of it or worse, kill themselves. Well that water under for me.
