dreamhost.com - download speeds & network info
Hi,
I'm searching for a good host to get one of my TGP's on. My eye spotted dreamhost.com but I can't see any network information, like in what datacenter they are in, what there connectivity is, etc. And the most important of all, I can't get a test file of 1GB that I can download of one of there servers to test the download speed. So my question to you guys: 1. Does anyone has a website hosted there? -- If so: How is the support/uptime/download speed -- Do you have the link for me? 2. Can anyone provide me with the network information? 3. I want to have a download file to test there speed... For at the end, if no one has any thing about them I will continue my search in Europe ![]() |

With $10,000, we'd be millionaires! We could buy all kinds of useful things like ... love!

Dreamhost used to be bad, because of the amount of over-selling they did. They say that has been changed and are 'getting on top of things'. Their corporate blog, at http://blog.dreamhost.com/, might offer the kind of info you seek. I haven't read it, so don't know for sure.
I am in the UK and must say that I am not over-enamoured with the speed of my sites at Dreamhost. And I seem to get some timeouts on a few occasions when surfing my sites. Might be me, I don't know, but at the price I pay, I can't really complain. I wouldn't put anything critical to my livelyhood there, though! I also have virtual hosting at Colo-cation and Webair. I have no complaints with either of those. Support - Colo-cation is top rate. Webair's isn't bad, but not as good. Speed - For my two TGPs there; Webair is great. Colo-cation is not slow, but not as fast (for me). Overall value for money, as far as I'm concerned, has to go with Webair, as they offer high bandwidth and space for less money. To sum up... Use Dreamhost as a startup host, only because of the amount of space and bandwidth you get for your money. When your site gets more 'important' to you, move to a more 'trusted' host. PS - By all means, if you want to test the speed of Dreamhost at (one of) my sites there, PM me. PPS - If you want a money off code for Dreamhost, ask, and I will get you one.

Hi! I use virtual hosting at Dreamhost.com (plan: Crazy Domain Insane) for my free sites. Everything was good, but yesterday I had received a letter from support about limits for bandwidth of my site.

So if the server you're on can't handle the load, ask them to move you to another server. |

dreamhost have horrible throttle policies, you get what you pay for! If you are serious about this industry, you need a good foundation which includes solid, fast webhosting. There are tons of good quality hosts out there, just look around and you will find way better hosts.
cheers, Luke

http://www.hootymcboobs.com/ Support is ok. At best it takes them 90min to respond. At worst it takes a day. Average seems to be around 2-3 hours. Some of their plans allow you to get a few callbacks each month. I haven't had any real problems with downtime. Sometimes there's a problem with one of the servers, but those don't last more than a few hours. I haven't experienced any major meltdowns (half a day or longer). Here's info on their server outages at Dreamhost's Emergency Status blog: http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/category/system-outages/ Personally, I think Dreamhost is great for basic stuff like freesites and galleries. But if you're doing something that requires blazing servers and fast personal support, you'll need to pay for a better host. |

Aw, Dad, you've done a lot of great things, but you're a very old man, and old people are useless

Actually i just pulled a site off of dreamhost for a client of mine. Even with us both emailing them, we never did get a response to get the FTP info. I had to figure it out myself. It seems ok, however i went through atci, and never regreted it once.
One tip, if you can't get in contact with the support via phone AND IM AND address AND email, don't go there. Most of the companys just allow email. If there going to host my site's which is my income, they better have someone around to reboot the servers at 1am incase it crashes. I sure as heck don't want to lose cash over the next 8 hours. Just my thought. |
