Am I The Only One With This Rule?

I have a rule on both my link lists that all content and html must be in the same folder. For example:

This is OK - http://www.yourdomain.com/free/sitename/index.html http://www.yourdomain.com/free/sitename/pic1.jpg

Not OK -
http://www.yourdomain.com/free/sitename/index.html
http://www.yourdomain.com/somethingelse/pics/pic1.jpg

I've been declining 90% of the submitted sites because people are not following this rule. Am I being too picky? I always get a feeling that something is "fishy" when webmasters can't put their 20 pics and html pages in the same directory. Maybe not everyone has a lot of disk space with their host or something. Anyway, thought I'd ask and see if other link lists require something similar or maybe I'm just being a hard ass and need to change this rule.

You want the _pictures_ to be in the same folder as the pages?

I would say that's unusual.

That's a very inefficient and disorganized way to build.

I haven't built that way since my first dumb newbie sites. I'm getting accepted everywhere I submit, so I would say your rule is uncommon.

Content in the same domain is a very common rule. Pages all in the same folder also. Content in the same folder? Never heard of that.

wow if thats the case I would ahve to upload the pics 10-12 seperate times to be in the same folder like your asking..but maybe Im building something wrong.

Never had much problem with where my images are anywhere so far?

I think you just recently declined one of my sites for this. I found it kinda odd as I hadnt run into this before. I would gladly continue sub'ing if you reconsidered this rule.

I am the "bastard" when it comes to this rule: All the html must be in the same folder. If you start on /site/folder/index.html - everything else has to be in site/folder, incouding the galleries. However, the actual images can be anywhere on the same server.

I would think you might be the only one with that rule.

For me it's same where images are, as long as they are in same domain.
With html pages, I like to see all in same folder.

but guys
who can explain me why?
why do u have the rules about the same folder .. etc.?

Is it the way to avoid cheaters? Or something like that?

I have the following structure of free site

warning page - http://domain.com/freesite/porn/
main page - http://domain.com/freesite/main/
gallery 1 - http://domain.com/freesite/gal1/
gallery 2 - http://domain.com/freesite/gal2/

and of course the pics and thumbs are inside the gal1 and gal2 folders in "pics" and "thumbs" folders. I like this structure. I used to work with it, why do u decline for this? Am i cheating or what?

After reading your posts, I think I need to amend my content rule. I guess if the html is in the same folder and the images are at least on the same domain, that'll be fine. I suppose I take for granted that I have unlimited server space and always put the 20 pics and html pages in their own directory when making free sites. I'll get this rule changed on my webmaster pages today. For all you reading this post that I've declined in the past, sorry about that and feel free to resubmit.

I know quite a few people follow that rule yes but I for one think it is not a good rule. A free site builder really doesn't want to upload 20 pics in 5-6 folders each time.

I'm glad if everyone happy with this canceled rule (content in the same folder).
But whats wrong with htmls into different folders? I guess most owners think google looks at different folders like at content duplication, but how about pretty various index pages, different warning text, banners etc and single main and galleries. Each of them cached by google like separate page...

Yeah exactly what I'm wondering SI. With multiple main/gallery pages, most of the index pages seem to get dropped by G/Yahoo. I can't see how that makes LL owners happy.

Thats kinda how I do mine...

site.com/good-name/extra/index.html
site.com/good-name/other/index.html
site.com/good-name/something/index.html
site.com/good-name/another/index.html

I do that with all the content in the /good-name/ folder.

I've only been building freesites for a few months, so I might be way off on this - I know RawAlex at least doesn't agree with it - but I build like this:

domain.com/free/site-name/images/gallery1 contains my pics and gallery1.html
domain.com/free/site-name/images/gallery1/thumbs contains my thumbnails
domain.com/free/site-name/images/gallery2 contains my pics and gallery2.html
domain.com/free/site-name/images/gallery2/thumbs contains my thumbnails
domain.com/free/site-name/ contains my main.html, 2257.html, disclaimer.html etc
domain.com/free/site-name/a-name contains an index.html that links up the main
domain.com/free/site-name/b-name contains an index.html that links up the main
etc.

The reason I do it this way is that if I had a main, 2257 etc in every folder containing an index I suspect that Google et al would view them all as duplicated content. Also, it just doesn't strike me as logical to reproduce those files in every directory containing an index - they're all going to be the same, so why not use one and link to it?

I have noticed, however, that some LLs do require all the HTML to be in one directory. I respect their requirements and have no wish to intentionally break any rules, so I don't submit to those lists. I am curious as to the reason for that requirement, though - is it just the personal taste of the owner, or is there some technical reason for wanting things that way?

Rob

Rob, have you considered just taking a few minutes and redoing the title / metas on each of these "folder" sites so that you can hit multiple keywords and multiple targets? It wouldn't take more than a few minutes, and instead of being duplicate content and it would be a bonus for your business?

Just a thought...

I like when all html are in the same folder (not so for pics!) and there must be NO duplicated (index.htm and index.html) there...if you have - you will be rejected.

Let me guess...
"There's no purposes...Just follow the rules!"

ps
All HTMLs into the same folder rule still not clear for me and another WMs. Why a few completely identical gallery and main pages are ok for SE instead a few pretty different index pages are not ok.
