Sleepy Let's All Learn About An Anterior Cervical Diskectomy With Fusion & Plating

Well, it turns out I have 3 or 4 vertebrae in my neck pushing on my spinal cord, causing the pain & numbness in my neck, shoulders, arms & hands as well as effecting how I walk. So, this is the procedure that I'll have done on Tuesday the 15th:

A 2-4 centimeter (depending on the number of levels) transverse incision is made in one of the creases of neck, just off the midline. The cervical fascia is gently divided in a natural plane, between the esophagus and carotid sheath (area containing the blood vessels in the neck). Small retractors and an operating microscope are used to allow the surgeon to visualize the anterior (front part) vertebral body and discs. After the retractor is in place, an x-ray is used to confirm that the appropriate spinal level(s) is identified.
Scary! Oh man, good luck Greenie.

Damn dude, that looks dangerous to have done.

You are going to be bionic afterwards.

Actually with all the stints, grafts, and screws in me I'm not sure which one of us is going to end up more machine than organic first.

I had a friend that had the same thing done, roughly the same symptoms, stumbled at times while walking, intense tiredness that came out of nowhere that would disappear a few minutes later, exhaustion, shoulder and neck pain, couldn't really turn his head too much.

He had the surgery, his wife drove him home hours afterwards, two days later he was back at work, three days later he drove himself.

It is a very common surgery and he said he wished he had seen a doctor a year or so earlier when the symptoms started, but, he's been fine ever since.

Good luck Greenie.

And I'm the one that wanted the cybernetic implant haha.

Hope everyone has a good day. I was informed a few minutes ago that it is Thursday, so, have a good Thursday.

If that fixes the problem I'd say: Go for it Greenie!
I don't know anything about surgeries or spinal problems but my gut says you'll be just fine

I scrolled through too fast and thought the pics Cleo posted were what they were going to do to you. Actually thought "wow, that's cool" before going back and reading the link about the actual procedure. Changed my thought to "wow, that's NOT cool." But I'm sure the docs know what they're doing so I'll add my best wishes that all goes well next week.
