How do you get your traffic?

I've searched the forum but I've not found the answer, dont know, maybe I'm just blind. But I am interested in how do you get traffic to your (free)sites? And which traffic is the most productive? Do you submit link lists, do you trade hard links? How do you make loads of traffic? Can you give a few tips to a newbie?

To give an answer to my question, I submit free sites at the moment and I am also focusing on hard link trades. Am I on the right way? Any ideas what should I do next? I am planning to build and submit free sites for quite some time now, and getting as much hard links as possible.
