Which codec should I be using?

I've been cracking off clips from a few movies today, and then it occured to me that my xvid encoded movies might not be acceptable. I notice a lot of sites using .wmv or .mpg files.

Would clips made in .avi using xvid codecs be acceptable in most places? Let me know.
