...using them successfully as a marketing tool to either make sales, drive traffic, or increase brand awareness depends alot on what you're promoting.

It requires that people willingly follow what you're posting. A solo model or any entity with a fan type following can use them very effectively. Those of us that are promoting sponsor sites have a much more difficult task using social networking to our advantage without blatantly spamming.
