frustration with ftp setup

I feel like a complete fool because I cannot set up my ftp client for uploading. I can successfully make the site on my wysiwyg NVU software, but when I want to upload it to the site it uploads to the wrong parts or says path not found. I am guessing it has to do with how my pages are linked, but I am unsure how to link correctly because there is no tutorial for linking folders, directories,ect.

How long did it take you guys to learn how to use your FTP properly? or is it just me?

I can learn the business side easy, but the technical side is proving to be my downfall. Any help is appreciated.

I'm hoping I don't have to learn CSS|shocking|
