There was an article recently about a site that removed the share buttons so that people would be enticed to cut and paste the URL, which shows up much differently in Facebook/Twitter and is usually considered a better 'share' than the button.

I think drop social media buttons was the blog post that started it, but, there was someone that did a very detailed writeup showing stats from Google Analytics and mixpanel that showed the results. Smashingmag.com was the site that showed their stats, but, I can't find the url for that.
