I'm sure that Steve Jobs was thinking of a sublayer of level 2 of the OSI model when he thought of his new computer. Strange that apple used appletalk and localtalk, only latter going to ethertalk (how much does the guy who comes up with these names make?). Like Micro$oft Apple got most of its GUI and mouse ideas from Xerox, who also pioneered ethernet (invented in the 70's by Robert Metcalf at Xerox) and still gets money for every MAC address issued.
