^ I do realize the little bastards can get crafty and bypass the router completely. You would probably need to keep it somewhere where they won't be tampering with it. They'll find their way around anything given enough time. I was one of those crafty little basards who could steal cigarettes from their mother's still-sealed packages of cigarettes without her ever knowing. I could make James Bond scratch his head in amazment when I needed nicotine.

// Gave cigarettes up 6 or 7 years ago.

I am a mother of 4 boys 15-3 years of age also a webmistress. Parents need to get off their lazy asses and moniter what their children are doing on the computer. My children use my computer I have no passwords, I just pay attention and know what they are doing on it. People have just become lazy and think that the government needs to raise their children for them.

Sparky, that PICS page is just incomprehensible.

I've been saying for years that if the government or ICANN or somebody would define a simple "kep the kids off this page" meta tag, every decent adult webmaster in the world would be happy to use it.

But I have no idea what that PICS tag is supposed to be. Whatever it is, it sure as fuck does not look simple.

Can you interpret?

Jay, you are my hero!! Your post said exactly what I scream about (to anyone who will listen) when I'm not chained to this damned computer.

My mother has been a licensed childcare provider for over 30 years and we have this conversation on the average of once a week anymore. The bullshit that passes for childrearing these days makes me want to hurl... people spend more time teaching their dog to do tricks than they do teaching their offspring how to be decent human beings with some respect for themselves, others, and the rules. Too many parents nowadays want the tax deduction or the status symbol... anything and everything but the responsibility of being a parent.

I too have a teenaged son, and you can bet your ass I know EXACTLY what he is doing when he's online. I still say I'd rather have him see a little sex or nudity than to have him exposed to a two-hour movie in which there is nothing but mindless, unnecessary, unrealistic ass-kicking and gun fights going on. Porn is hands down the friendlier option IMHO.

Hey Bill,

If you would like to use the PICS meta tag on your site you need to go to...

http://www.icra.org

and/or

http://www.safesurf.com

and rate your web site or domain.

Regards,
SF

i have a whole disclaimer on my site that discusses having frank and open dialogue with your children.

disclaimer

I even offered to the parents to let ME do the discussing. We've come a long way only to be stuck back in the closet.

What i find most amusing is that the majority of voters are children of the 60's and 70's who came of age during the free love years, now they are screaming because they are afraid of what their teenager MIGHT see? Oh PULEASE!!

Right on Jay.. I've always said, parents should have to take a test before being allowed to be parents. Kind of like drivers ed.

Ohhh, so it's just the icra tag.

Well, that doesn't help very much.

ICRA is sweet and all, but I've got hundreds of domains and thousands of sites and tens of thousands of pages.

There is no fucking way I have the time to get an icra tag for every piece of internet real estate I own.

So to me, the icra tag is as useless as tits on a boar hog.

All I want, all I have ever wanted, is a simple, straightforward meta tag I can easily put on all my pages that tells every browser this is not a page for kids.

I already put a content="Mature" tag on almost every page, and I could add more content= tags, but there's no standard for that type of tag.

Dumb fucking politicians can't ever be simple and practical.
