I use Arles by DigitalDutch to do my thumbs, and resize my large images. It will make square thumbs if you set it up to do so.

However, I also go back and manually re-thumb any that need to be cropped better.

Personally, I'm not wild about square thumbs.

Me either. I guess I used the wrong word. I needed square "images" for an index page as part of a table I'm building. I found out that the "crop" function of Irfanview is what I needed to use. I was trying to use the "cut" function and that wasn't working.

I also make all my thumbs by hand. That gets the best results for what I need to do.
