If you have a lot of money to spend, then outsource the affiliate program to a management company and let them handle promotion, traffic generation, affiliate relations, etc.

If you're on a low budget, spend at least six months to a year learning the biz, especially focusing on traffic generation, and once you've got your own traffic, then evaluate whether running a paysite or being an affiliate is best for you.

Lots less headaches being an affiliate.

Its a bit besides the point - but can you recommend any outsourcing companies actually capable of such varied and complicated tasks? The ones ive hired for various tasks in the past have always been fairly limited when it came down to business...
