IE6 and IE7 don't know about table-* properties, at all. Even then, if your page is not xhtml strict or transitional, there will still be differences in how things are rendered between browsers.

Spent last friday talking to a webdesigner friend to learn some more about CSS and he said that until IE8 comes out and CSS support in all browsers is more or less "identical", it's a huge pain in the ass to get things to look exactly the same across different browsers.
