At this point, though America is (in theory) primarily Christian, it has become a cultural standard due to historical trends in medicine. It's actually relatively recent - by all accounts, coming into popular practice at birth in the twentieth century - but firmly entrenched in our visual standards. Much as thinner women are generally deemed more attractive in US culture, as are circumcised men.
