You are going to find that no matter what you do, someone will be displeased and it is far from me to tell anyone how to do their site. I, too, have been subbing there on and off for years, and know the site is well respected in the community.

Yes, using a solid background for the links will make them more visible and easier to read. Is it your goal to make minor changes that will not alter the spirit of your site? or are you looking for a complete overhaul? One suggestion would be to make your site easier for you to edit by changing over to CSS to control the font sizes as well as backgrounds for your tables and cells. It isn't as hard to apply and it reduces a lot of the clutter in your code. PLUS when you decide to give it another overhaul, you have less work to do for more bang.
