So that means they're not closing the sites, they're closing the affiliate program and keeping all the money.

Be a good webmaster and spend a few hours deleting all your links to them.
If everyone does that there won't be much money for them to keep.
Why should they continue to profit from the work you have done?
If their traffic bottoms out it will help reverse the trend that you have forecast.

Ideally it would be nice to swap the sponsor code out, however if one does not want to risk getting a DMAC notice. Then simply delete the links or just do a complete re-direct on the page and move your surfer to something similar but paying. I have done that many times in the past with out much loss of traffic.

Most importantly if you are an affiliate you must react to these changes and make sure all of your hard work and effort does not mean an empty wallet.

Webmasters want to shut down their aff programs that's fine and dandy but then, they do not have the right to benefit from the traffic you have worked so long and hard to bring them.

That traffic is yours to keep or kill.
The decision is yours and yours alone.
So whether you 404 the links, swap the code or do page or site re-direction it doesn't matter.
What matters is that you do something

Do you really think that sponsor that owes/ripsoff affiliates want to inititate a legal battle with them. Discovery supoenas are such fun things.

BTW, that should be DMCA notice.
