Our hot water heater bursted about six years ago but it's in the garage so all it did was flood the street and cost a huge water bill.

Wasn't the hot water tank, that was sump pump failure so the entire basement flooded but the water tank is all rusty along the bottom from sitting in 3" of water for 3 days so the insurance company replaced it too.
