I have done both, using same colors as sponsor site and doing totally different design. Both seems work.
Except my only twink site I designed looking just like sponsor's site. It has had thousands and thousands of hits to my sponsor but no signups. Maybe I should leave gay sites...I have built 3 and no sinups...
