Tag All Your Sites

No, this isn't going to be another Walrus rant on the importance of tagging. If you haven't gotten it yet, I give up!

This is a post to let you know I'm happy with Wordpress again, ie. I found a tagging plug-in that works with the latest version and does almost all of the things UTW did for tagging. It's called Simple Tags and while I haven't gotten to spend all the time I want to with this plug-in, it does seem to do most of everything I want it to.

In the process, I also found a service that "pieces your site together, intelligently tagging and linking your web content". Why is this cool? For me, I've built a number of splogs having to live without the ability to tag. It's driven me nuts and the traffic numbers have sucked. Now I can resolve that and it should be a good test on exactly how much tagging does help with traffic.

It's cool for just about anyone else because it should be able to tag almost anything so you can add tags to all your sites.

The site is called Jiglu. I'll let everyone know how it works with my splogs once I finish cleaning up the disaster know as XXX Blog Index and Porn Blog Surfer.

Walrus - if I use All-In-One Seo plugin should I still use simple tags?

The documentation reads there is one or two fields not to fill out but the tags help with SEOing.

My problem is that maybe it is the design since the coding was done by a programmer but I am not able using widgets. (I am totally new to blogs.) So Jiglu still waits for me..

It's too bad "tag" has so many different meanings. In this instance it's meant in the context of a social tagging system, We are really talking apples and oranges here and it kind of depends how you set up your categories on your blog. The all in one seo plug-in takes your category information and adds it as keywords for your single post displays. But tagging your posts go much deeper than that but simple tags does add your social tags as meta keywords if you want.

While I don't have any real proof, I believe that surfers really like tag clouds and given the choice they will use them to navigate your blog over any other method. Add one sometime and you'll see an increase in your page views. At least I did.

I get much more in depth with my keywords with tags as well. Amateur may be a category...or even one social tag keyword...but I'll use social tags that are more specific to the individual posts, things like blonde, blow job, masterbation, etc. I like 5 or 6 tags that really describe the post.

It will be a couple weeks before I can play with Jiglu on my splogs but when I do I'll look at writing a tutorial on how to add it.

I am wondering, is there something wrong with the built in tagging and tag cloud widget that comes with Wordpress? Or are you referring to older WP versions that don't have tagging?

The one that comes with WP seems to work fine for me. Or am I missing something?

Did the same thing to one of my blogs, and worked like a charm.

For the way you blog, it may add nothing for you except the ability to use your tags as meta keywords in your single post view. Although with it's auto tag feature, you could set up a list of your tags and they would be automatically added.

For those of us who like to remote post, ie. use a script like BO or a desktop program to post to their blogs, it gives us the ability to tag from afar

For those who do a lot with RSS feeds, the auto tag feature is one of the only ways available to get tags added to your posts without editing them and while I'm not a search engine guy I think any value add you do to a RSS feed will only enhance your position with them.

Jiglo is mostly for those who are using versions of WP that didn't have tags or a tagging plug in. Although, I think if you have any type of dynamic page, adding tags to it would be a cool thing.

Now that's something to think about, i never really gave the meta much thought. After looking at some of my single posts, there is not much meta data.. Though my established blogs do pretty well, but maybe they could do better?

That makes sense now. I saw people talking about tag plug-in's and kept thinking, WP already has it built in, least newer version., wondering what was I missing?

Your talking using feeds, like sponsor provied, directly into posts right? Also makes sense.

Thats what I was thinking, asked for sure. Though you brought up some other good reasons. Maybe I'll have to look into a plug-in, least for the meta angle.

thanks walrus; this may come in handy for my needs too; I've actually been looking for a way to post the "recent posts" from my blog on the homepage of my site; can't seem to find a feed generator that will use php - so that the recent posts will show up as searchable (indexable??) text... i'll see if this link of yours for tagging has anything to help!

I just tried to activate the jiglu plugin and my entire blog went blank
http://www.porndiner.com looked kind of empty, just like it's admin...

After I deleted the plugin file from the server all was back to normal, maybe I still got a WP version that's too old.

Tag
A tag is a keyword which describes all or part of a Post. Think of it like a Category, but smaller in scope. A post may have several tags, many of which relate to it only peripherally. Like Categories, Tags are usually linked to a page which shows all posts having the same tag. Unlike Categories, Tags can be created on-the-fly, by simply typing them into the tag field.

Tags can also be displayed in "clouds" which show large numbers of Tags in various sizes, colors, etc. This allows for a sort of total perspective on the blog, allowing people to see the sort of things your blog is about most.

Many people confuse Tags and Categories, but the difference is easy: Categories generally don't change often, while your Tags usually change with every Post.
