In my case and I believe most other LL owners the number of clicks you send me is not going to affect the listing - but really do you want to give up that traffic? Its more important for you to get that traffic to buy on your free site - or if that fails send them to another of your sites (like a hub) to try to get a sale out of them - maybe you had an Indian site but they really get off on more asian looking babes - by sending them to your hub you can offer them a choice and "target" them better.
In the long run - once you have a hub or fake linklist - you can expand it to start trading as a real linklist - in the meantime you can always use toplists,linkdumps and of course the SEs to get more traffic to your hub or linklist.
Make sure that you also submit your free sites to DMOZ as although its not a lot of clicks to your sites, its some - and will help with your SE placement
<added> there are a few - I can only think of 1 right now that operate as a combo linklist/toplist that would place your free site higher for your traffic
