Flash.ocx - wtf is it, and do I need it?

Keep crashing on the board every now and then - well a lot actually lol
Get an error dialogue box appear stating that windows has encountered a problem with the file flash.ocx
What is it? attempts at googling leave me confused as to whether I need to download it or disable it. I'm guessing it's for the flash banners that appear here, so I need it, anyone able to confirm that? And tell me a good place to download from? I went to macromedia's site the other day to install the flash player but I'm guessing I've done something wrong. I didn't get the usual 'save or run' box, just a 'download successful' which I thought woould solve the problem but hasn't done so.
Help very much appreciated

Did you uninstall your flash player before re-installing it?
I found this post for IE6:
Uninstalling Flash
-----------------------

1. Click on Start-> Settings-> Control Panel.
2. In the Control Panel, click on Internet Options.
3. Here, under the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click on
‘Settings’.
4. In the Settings box, click on View Objects.
5. This will open up a list of all the web-installed programs. Right click on the
item ‘Shockwave Flash Object’. Select ‘Remove’.
6. A dialog box will appear asking you if you are sure you want to remove
Shockwave, click ‘Yes’.

You can then download and install the Flash and Shockwave Players for IE from the Macromedia websites below:
http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/...ShockwaveFlash

And
http://sdc.shockwave.com/shockwave/d.../download.cgi?

Hi UW,
I didn't, so it was probably a corrupt file then. Used your info to remove and re-stall, hopefully all will be well.
Thanks for the help

Aaargh..............
Fucking thing is bugging the shit out of me now lol
Tried uninstalling and reinstalling again, get the same thing, encountered an error, browsers all shut down, ad infinitum. Well, sometimes rebooting the system helps, but fuck, how frustrating. Anyone got any ideas?
