Exclamation Use Firefox and still infect IE.

Saw this today.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/03...ive_slimeware/

Looks like it only affects Windows. From what I read it is because IE is so integrated into the OS that even surfing with another browser doesn't prevent IE from getting infected.

Before executing the applet, Firefox shows a big yellow exclamation mark dialog telling the user that the applet comes from an untrusted source and that its certificate is invalid or expired.
You have to be an idiot to be infected.

Just spend some time watching a typical computer user.

Actually the most stupid users that I've ever dealt with have been Mac users. lol

I think you could put up a giant warning that your computer is about to be infected and burst into flames and half the users will still click ok.

That says it all. The biggest security weakness is between the chair and the keyboard.

Don't forget that AOL, Microsoft and others add sites to your trusted list. There is a reason for all that free software.

I wonder if there is a way to completely eliminate IE from your computer and still use WinXP?

From what little I understand about Windows you can't since IE is also your file browser so without it you wouldn't get a desktop or anyway of browsing your hard drive.

From what I understand it is this integration of IE into the OS that allows some really cool stuff to be done, like what they did in the real estate database that makes it Windows IE only accessible, and the horrendous stuff like all the issues with virus and stuff.

Unfortunately not! After IE 6 or installing SP2 you can't even re-install a corrupted version of IE... |shocking|

Have you ever tried to un-install Outlook? Even that doesn't work! I have never run it for a second...

I'm not a big IE fan, but I can't wait to see what's in store for IE7. Not only is the standards engine going to be reworked, but also the security aspect.

With tabbed browsing, IE7 is going to seem like a Firefox clone.
