I just purchased and installed a new RocketPod 120G removable HD. If you are looking for something simple and easy for backups this kicks ass!

I also use it between (home and office) puters

I hope you have better luck with ACOMdata drives then I've had.

We've been using their FireWire products and have had a lot of drive failures. The worst thing is they take forever to replace them and will not cross ship you a new replacement.

I'm using it on my USB ports. I could use on my firewire but I leave that open for my vid camera |rasta|

The problem is not with what buss you use it on the problem is their crappy drives that they put in their cases and their slow customer service if there is a problem.

Not really much to tell.

Takes any standard ATA drive. It actually could support two drives, but there is only room for one drive. If you have a drive laying around pop it into the encloser and you are ready to go.

I carry one of these with me that has a 60 gig drive in it. I keep all my tools on the drive and since it is both USB and FireWire it connects to anything. Macs can boot from a FireWire drive so I often use it to boot a Mac.

Sometimes I'll get a hard drive that I need to get the info off of. I'll take my drive out of the case and then pop the drive that I need to access into it, only takes a few minutes.

When shopping for a FireWire encloser just make sure it is uses an Oxford 911 chip, most of the newer ones are.

There is no difference between Mac and PC on this stuff other then how you choose to format the drive.

I actually also own an ACOMData FireWire/USB 120 gig drive that I use for nightly backups. The hard drive that is in the case, I don't know what make it is, has failed twice. ACOMData's support is slow and basically sucks. If it fails again I'm going to void the warranty and put a Western Digital Hard Drive in the case since it is a good case with an Oxford 911 chip.

Oh yeah…

There is a new FireWire that is twice as fast as the old FireWire, it is called FireWire 800.

The conector on FireWire 800 is different. My new laptop has conectors for both. I've yet to own a FireWire 800 drive or even ever seen one in person, but it is still a regular ATA drive inside.

I see they are now selling cases with USB2, FireWire, and FireWire 800 ports.

I guess a FireWire 800 case with a really fast drive in it would be awesome for Photoshop or video work. It's over kill for what I do, but who knows…

I have 2 Maxtor External Firewire drives and I'll probably purchase a 3rd. The first drive is over 2.5 years old and so far I've had no problems. I hate saying that but lets hope I didn't jinx anything.

I looked for a Maxtor external drive because I've really liked their internal drives over the years (even in the olden days when you had to partition the drive) but they didn't have any that would handle the amount of data I needed in stock.

Zammmm!!!! The 250G external drive has been out for about 8 months now. I'm not sure going above that size is going to be cost affective but I'd love to get more info on your findings.

I transfer and backup over 500G per day on just fewer than 300 sites. As I said they didn’t have a Maxtor on the shelf so I bought this. No ideas on the cost of the Maxtor since it wasn’t available.

I keep redundant systems because I’ve lost data and backup data before, due to server problems, and by hackers. Finally I had to adopt the NASA method. |ufo|

I think the maxtor one touch back-up drives are good value as these come bundled with retrospect which is a great piece of software!

Seagate harddrives are the best though, then it would be maxtor..... to me westerndigital would be waaayy down the list... somewhere near samsung

I have used removable HD for backups for years. I bought a box for HD that I put in the rack. When I backup I just put the hd on that box and lock it by key.

Only problem is that that goddam key will hide somewhere every time I need it. I put it in safe place but it's always in runaway when I try to use it.
