Use of nbsp

I know that SEs concatenate a string like outlaw_girl and read it as outlawgirl, which is why you should use outllaw-girl as a file name if you want to promote the phrase. I wondered if the SEs used &nbsp as a delimiter or a concatenation. It was looking at the source on a link on GG&J that made me think about it, but I can't remember which thread it was in now.
